The Abergwesyn Pass

If you type in Abergwesyn Pass into Google the search results include many blokey car sites describing what a great road it is to drive. There is no mention of the potential for visual artistic expression, the serenity of the place or the spiritual ambience of the area which is dramatic and remote. Having said that, it is a great road to drive.

We were on our way to explore Llyn Brianne, a reservoir beyond Beulah and didn’t know about the reputation Abergwesyn Pass, we just happened upon it as it’s the way to the reservoir. It is one of those places that make you go ‘Wow!’. It wasn’t until we were home and looked it up that we learned that it is known nationally and even internationally as one of the roads to drive in Wales, of which it has to be said, there are many. One blog on the web describes it as “what is in all probability one of the most epic driving roads in the country…”.

The thing is, it does seem to be a bit of a secret and hidden from the Mid Wales tourist information that we have seen which makes it all the more exciting to discover. While we were there a bright yellow Lamborghini was being filmed, it is that kind of road that looks good on TV and adverts. We did it in a blue Vauxhall Agila, a car that may one day have a cult status and an owners club, but up next to an expensive brightly coloured sports car doesn’t really do it. Not that this detracted from the thrill of the road, which includes a very steep section called ‘The Devils’ Staircase’ for which first gear was required, in the Agila anyway.

From The Owls B&B in Builth Wells take the A483 to Llandovery. At Beulah, just past the petrol station go right, signposted ‘Abergwesyn 6’. Beyond Abergwesyn take a right sign posted ‘Tregaron 14’, then notice the sign that says ‘unsuitable for Caravans, Single track road’. Then just shut up and drive. We can’t wait to do it again.
